The Secret That Really Pops Podcast Intros

When the typical podcast intro just didn’t cut it anymore, some podcasters have taken a swing in a different direction, creating characters that embodied real feelings, interests and desires.

Recently, I was listening to the CBC Radio One program O’Reilly and the Age of Persuasion. Terry, known for his insight into how marketing and advertising have forever permeated our lives, is an expert in the field and well worth listening to on a Saturday afternoon.

What I have written below is my interpretation of Terry’s broadcast last weekend.

When the traditional broadcast announcer just didn’t cut it anymore, advertising companies took a swing in a different direction, creating characters that embodied real feelings, interests and desires.

The late 1950s and early 60s marked the end of one-way advertisements that ceased to boost a company’s ROI. This decade also brought a host of changes to the way that advertisers started communicating with their audiences.

After a while, no one could relate to the stand-offish announcer, perched on his chair, wearing a tweed suit, and a hand cupped over one ear.

Announcers, who had broken through the proverbial “Fourth Wall” in before, were not performing their function as they had in the past; they were not ‘getting through’ to the public any more.

You wouldn’t envision announcer man coming to your neighborhood BBQ or taking their child to a movie. Announcers were not real in a sense and appeared to be cold, disconnected and impersonal.

This is why advertising geniuses, for example, David Ogilvy, started making advertising more of a personal medium, introducing characters such as Mrs. Olson (Folger’s Coffee), Aunt Jemima (Maple syrup and pancakes), Charlie the Tuna (StarKist Tuna), and Madge the Manicurist (Colgate-Palmolive).

For example, Mrs. Olson of Folger’s fame was very effective:

The TV spokeswoman for Folger’s Coffee, made by Procter & Gamble. Introduced in 1963, Mrs. Olson (the late Virginia Christine), was a Swedish woman who seemed to know all the young couples in town whose husband’s never asked for a second cup of coffee. Of course, that was her cue to sell them on the idea of Folger’s Coffee whose catchphrases were “Mountain Grown.” and “It’s the richest kind.” The commercials ended in 1985.

And of course, who could forget the ever-striving Charlie the Tuna who was just never good enough to be put into a can of StarKist Tuna… How about Tony the Tiger and those Frosted Flakes?

What advertisers realized was that people sell products. Whether on camera or through voice-over, personalities sell.

These characters were relevant, interesting, and often faced with the same challenges of the average person who was listening or viewing the ad.

Now, just how do you achieve the same extraordinary results with a voice actor as with an on-camera actor?

Simple.

Be sure that whoever you hire to voice your commercial has a voice that embodies the brand you are promoting.

The Power of the Human Voice

Getting a great voice actor on the job does more for you than just get a script read. The voice actor brings that script to life and is a living testament to the brand, using their voice to convey all of the brand qualities and attributes so that the script doesn’t have to, saving the copy writer time and making the ad appear more natural, thus, more persuasive.

There is nothing more persuasive than the human voice. There is something innate, primitive and personal about how one human being can affect another. This is why advertising with a person selling a product is far more effective than an announcer or text ad.

Voices can be warm, funny, insightful, authentic, trustworthy, taste, grace, strength, empathy, sincerity, interest, confidence, and so on.

Sometimes, an advertisement featuring a personality can become even more effective, particularly if the character or voice actor promoting the product is a celebrity or has celebrity status.

One of the most memorable and humorous examples Terry used was of Eugene Levy’s commercial for the Gershwin musical Crazy For You.

By renaming his daughters Ira and George, hearing only from his wife through lawyers, and losing himself completely in the whole Crazy for You lifestyle, Eugene’s performance conveyed that seeing the Gershwin musical would change your life or have a significant impact. His character, Norman, who had changed his name to Norman Gershwin, made all of this clear through the recanting of the incredible lengths he had gone to just because he was crazy for Crazy for You.

If that didn’t draw in mammoth sales, I don’t know what else could have done better.

Eugene Levy’s endorsement along with this performance as the newly christened Norman Gershwin was over the top, funny, and whimsical, the perfect combination for the theatre company to draw a crowd, regardless of if the show was playing on Broadway or at the local community theatre.

Gerald Levert G Spot Pop Music CD Review

G Spot is the latest Pop CD put out by the extremely talented Gerald Levert who once again has delivered a brilliant collection of tracks. I’m confident Gerald Levert fans, and Pop fans alike will be pleased with this one.

The CD launches with a great track, Too Much Room, that I suspect will be heard on radio stations everywhere, and deservedly so. It’s a really nice track.

Pop music fans will recognize some of the well known contributors on the project including Emma Kummrow and Peter Nocella plus a few other notables as well.

I’m of the opinion that G Spot is certainly Gerald Levert’s best work in a few years. A totally enjoyable CD and an outstanding release. What I call must have music. I give it two thumbs up because it’s a collection that even the casual Pop fan can appreciate and enjoy.

While this entire album is outstanding some of my favorites are track 5 – The Top Of My Head, track 7 – Oh What A Night, and track 13 – All That Matters

My Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 1 – Too Much Room. This is a great track!

Distributors: How to Get ‘Em Begging for Your Music

There are few things more satisfying than having a ready market, client, customer or buyer strongly interested in your business, product or service.

But, in order to get that interest, your business, product or service must not only be considered a hot commodity by the end user, but it must also have heavy buyer demand.

And, in the marketing and distribution of music releases, it goes without saying that one of the most important elements of music’s commercial success is distribution, in successfully moving music via sales.

Distribution is important because, without it, your sales will be very limited and you won’t make much money. Alternatively, with it, every aspect of your life and career can be dramatically enhanced and, particularly, financially.

But for independent musicians, distribution has long served as a, sort of, curse for quite some time in the sense that it has largely evaded them.

Online distribution is great, but what about consumers who expect to find your music in their neighborhood music stores after hearing it on their area radio stations, reading about it in their area newspapers, or hearing it in their nightclubs?

More importantly, after hearing it via one of these media, what is their perspective of you as an artist when they fail to find it in retail stores?

One way to eliminate this faltering scenario for your next release is to ‘get the drop’, so to speak, on distributors and manipulate your desired result with them well before they know what hit ‘em.

Consider this…

Many artists believe that the number of sales is the most important aspect that makes distributors sit up and take notice, but that is not necessarily so. Even though sales are very important, distributors place far more emphasis and value on the frequency of those same sales.

In other words, how often your music sells out of retail stores, and how often those stores place re-orders for your music, weighs much more in your favor.

It is the element of “selling out” at retail that makes distributors do double takes, in terms of their acquiring an interest in picking up and including your product in their distributor line.

So, how do you do that…how do you make that happen?

Here is one way…

Whether you reside in a metropolitan area, or rural area, select ten retailers, major chain or independent, that are “Indie” friendly, and will allow you to consign product to their stores.

As I’ve stated in previous articles, limit your number of units to five per store (no more) per 30-day period.

Get any promotion and publicity on radio, in print, on cable, and otherwise, going to drive consumers to stores to purchase your music.

On your website, be sure to list all ten stores, along with their complete contact information, along with the store telephone numbers, websites and email addresses. This is also a good thing to do because you can provide distributors with a direct contact to those retailers for sales verification.

For your area radio stations that air your music format, get in touch with the specialty and mix show producers. Then, ask them to consider you for an interview on their shows, as well as their consideration in adding your music to their playlist.

For your local cable companies, do the same by finding locally hosted video shows that may allow you to come on as a guest or allow you to guest-host the show as a local celebrity. And, if you have a video, by all means, entice them to add it to their playlist.

For local print media, naturally, get a press release to them that addresses your music and request their consideration of a feature interview or music review. But, also include the list of stores in your news release where your music can be purchased.

If you are performing live in your local area, even though you may sell your music at your gigs, be sure to also announce that your music is in area stores, and that the audience can get the list of stores from your website.

Use any additional promotion and publicity efforts that you can think of to further drive local consumers to local retailers. By doing so, you will assuredly create local store demand for your product with repeat retail orders.

When your product begins its “re-order” phase, this will signal a demand for your product. And, since radio is in constant touch with retailers as to what is selling, retailers will inform radio of your demand.

When this cycle has been in effect for a number of weeks, and as you now have documented sales of re-orders, distributors are going to take your music far more serious than if you were simply approaching them without any sales history.

Your re-orders will indicate strong consumer interest in your music, as well as pique distributors’ own business interest. Their assumption will be that, based on your local sales interest, this result would only be magnified successfully on regional, national and international levels.

Actually, if your re-orders are at a certain frequency, it is very likely that some distributors will discover your sales results and approach you first.

The Holiday season is filled with good times with friends and family, good food, timeless traditions, and amazing music. Traditional holiday music has the power to bring back memories from family generations and bring together the old and young. Two holidays during the winter that have timeless, classic, and century old music is Christmas and Hanukkah. These holidays have songs that make our all time favorite music lists. Here are some traditional holiday songs from winter holidays.

There are so many classic Christmas songs that have been around for many years. A lot of artists today make modern renditions of some of our favorites. It seems like every top rock, country, or pop artist has a Christmas album. Their albums include some of our old time favorites and new hits. Traditional Christmas songs range from carols, to ballads, to instrumental, to classic songs. Some of our favorite Christmas carols have been around for centuries. Some songs that may sound familiar to you are “Angels We Have Heard On High” or “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing.” More modern Christmas tunes are songs such as “White Christmas,” “Rocking Around the Christmas Tree,” or “Silent Night.” A lot of traditional Christmas music is also in some of our favorite movies as well.

Hanukkah songs are beautiful and rich with tradition. The songs are not only about the holiday itself, but go along with lighting candles on the menorah. A famous comedian, Adam Sandler, wrote a comical song about Hanukkah to bring a modern touch to the holiday. A very eloquent and traditional song, “Mi Y’ maleil,” is song in Hebrew and was written about spiritual victory. It has also been translated into an English version, and the titled is translated as “Who Can Retell.” Another classic song about Hanukkah is called, “Light One Candle.” This was written about the Maccabees’ and the struggle for equality and justice and about Judaism through the ages. A common image representing Hanukkah is the dreidel. A song that teaches about the dreidel is called, “I have a Little Dreidel.”

A lot of these songs are played on both traditional and Internet radio stations during the winter season and are both considered main holidays within the season. There are some programs that dedicate the entire month of December to only playing traditional holiday music. What songs bring back childhood memories for you or memories with family and friends? How can I make a DVD with some music videos from youtube but adding the lyrics myself?

I need to make a karaoke DVD for my school. It’s intended to learn another language by practicing pronunciation as you sing along. I know how to download the videos, but I don’t have any idea of how can I add the lyrics and then to record it. With Movie Maker I can do something with mp3 tracks and PowerPoint stuff, but I wanted the DVD to play the video with the artist performing. Agggghhh! Why they make me do this kind of homeworks?!!! If you know something about this, please help me
